Nonlinearities in the Bioeffects of Ultrasound
نویسنده
چکیده
Biological effects of ultrasound involve nonlinear phenomena in qualitatively different ways. (1) The propagation of sound itself is nonlinear. Most nonthermal bioeffects of interest to users of diagnostic ultrasound require acoustic pressures great enough that the wave becomes distorted by nonlinear propagation. Under 1imi ting conditions this process can increase the absorption parameter of weakly absorbing medta by orders of magnitude. (2) Acoustic cavitation is highly nonlinear. At low amplitudes the response of a bubble is dominated by the acoustic pressure. At a critical acoustic pressure, however, the inertia of the surrounding medium becomes controlling. At this threshold, a 10 or 20% increase in acoustic pressure Ieads to increases in the collapse pressures in the bubble by orders of magnitude. (3) Very little of the biochemistry, physiology and pathology of the biological system is linear. me rates of biochemical processes, including thermal denaturation of biological macromolecules, are exponential functions of the temperature. Wether the physical process of heating by ultrasound is linear or nonlinear, this leads to a very strong non] inear dependence of thermal tissue damage and teratologica[ effects upon the leveIs of ultrasound,

Biological Effect of Modern Fetal Ultrasound Techniques on Human Dermal Fibroblast Cells
Background: Diagnostic ultrasound has been used to detect human disease especially fetus abnormalities in recent decades. Although the harmful effects of diagnostic ultrasound on human have not been established so far, several researchers showed it has had bioeffects in cell lines and in experimental animals. Three-dimensional (3D), four-dimensional (4D), and color Doppler sonography are new te...
متن کاملBioeffects considerations for diagnostic ultrasound contrast agents.
Diagnostic ultrasound contrast agents have been developed for enhancing the echogenicity of blood and for delineating other structures of the body. Approved agents are suspensions of gas bodies (stabilized microbubbles), which have been designed for persistence in the circulation and strong echo return for imaging. The interaction of ultrasound pulses with these gas bodies is a form of acoustic...
متن کاملRisky business: applying risk/benefit analysis consistently in entertainment ultrasound.
Fetal non-medical entertainment ultrasound (NEU) using three-dimensional (3D) and 4D fetal images is widely available. Couples are offered real-time scans, souvenir images, DVDs and sex determination. This is sometimes referred to as entertainment, boutique, shopping-mall, elective or fetal-keepsake imaging. It appears to be most prevalent in the USA where, in one study, 9% of pregnant women ad...
متن کاملMeasurement and correlation of acoustic cavitation with cellular bioeffects.
Using broadband noise as a measure of cavitation activity, this study determined the kinetics of cavitation during sonication of Optison contrast agent and tested whether cellular bioeffects can be predicted by cavitation dose. Cell suspensions were exposed to ultrasound at varying acoustic frequency, pressure, exposure time, Optison concentration and cell type to obtain a broad range of bioeff...
متن کاملRecommendations on the safe use of ultrasound contrast agents.
Clinical applications and safety concerns Clinical users should balance the expected clinical benefit from ultrasound contrast agents against the possibility of associated bioeffects. Caution should be exercised in the use of microbubble ultrasound in tissues where damage to microvasculature could be dangerous. Some areas of concern include the brain, the eye, the fetus and the neonate. Clinica...
